Smells Like Summer
Smells Like Summer
Just mulched ground, so brown and newly mowed grass, so verdant and very green
The steamy air after a thunder shower, so fresh and clean
Hot dogs and hamburgers grilling over hickory smoking and hot, smoldering coals
Steaks and ribs sizzling as the gas flames flare out through the pipes’ small holes
A flowery patch of clover, sweeter than the inside of a confectionary store
The cold, salty effervescence from a North Atlantic wave pounding on the rocky shore
Sparkling clear, chlorinated pools full of swimmers, some laughing, some splashing
Pink roses, orange hibiscus and purple sweet peas, colorfully clashing and fragrantly flashing
Lush, long, green vines of honeysuckle and jasmine that smell truly divine
Heavy clusters of purple and white grapes, juicy ripe and ready for making into fine wine
Steaming hot blue crabs spiced with cider vinegar, coarse salt, and Old Bay
Sweaty bodies, suntanned skin laden with salt and sand from frolicking on the beach all day
Peaches, papayas, mangoes, and melons bursting with bountiful nectar fit for our God
Fried okra and freshly boiled limas that in the morning were bulging in the pod
So many Summer smells cause my soul to swell with smiling delight
And they whisk away all thoughts fraught with flakes full of frosty fright!
